How Are People Exposed To Asbestos?

Asbestos exposure has been linked to serious illnesses, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Workers in certain industries and professions had a higher risk of being exposed to asbestos in the past. This exposure also increased the risk of their family members being exposed and suffering from the same illnesses in the future. Individuals have been exposed to asbestos in a variety of industries or when using certain products. Some common ways people have been exposed to asbestos include (this is by no means an exhaustive list):

  • Shut downs at an industrial facility: Shut downs or turnarounds happen when an industrial facility stops operations to perform large-scale maintenance tasks over a limited period of time. An example would be when a refinery shuts down to do maintenance work with a group of different trades. Several maintenance activities happening at the same time by different groups can lead to additional risks for exposure due to the complex procedures being performed at the same time.
  • Overhauls: Overhauls occur at shipyards when a ship needs significant maintenance or repair. The ship will dock and undergo an overhaul, leading to asbestos exposure for workers and individuals on the ship at that time.
  • Tie-in work: Pipefitters, plumbers, laborers and insulators do tie-in work. This involves tying new piping into existing stream or water lines. While tying in, workers may be exposed to asbestos containing insulation on the existing pipes.

Family members of workers in industries with asbestos-based products can also be exposed to asbestos and later be diagnosed with mesothelioma. This includes spouses and children who are in contact with a worker’s clothes.
