Abandoned Asbestos Mining Town Turned into Haven for Orphans

The Bulembu Ministries Swaziland has stepped in to take over Bulembu, a former mining town in Swaziland, turning it into a haven for 306 orphans.

Bulembu provides the orphans with placement in a home with a caregiver, a school, and a health clinic. The town is also trying to build a number of businesses, including a dairy that provides milk to all the orphans.

Despite its success, not everyone is excited about the Bulembu project: some are concerned about the safety of the town. Bulembu produced asbestos for decades--and even now that the asbestos mining has stopped, many of the children's homes still have asbestos roofs and the mine's dump is situated in the center of the town.
