Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by asbestos. It is often referred to as a medical issue that impacts a person’s lungs. Some of the symptoms can include things like chest pain or trouble breathing.

It is true that mesothelioma can develop this way, but it is certainly not the only place that it is found. It is just the most common, and it is known as pleural mesothelioma. One of the main ways that people are exposed to asbestos particles is when they breathe them in, which is why the lungs are so often impacted.

But even when someone has this condition, it may not be the lungs themselves that have developed the cancer. Mesothelioma is usually in some of the surrounding tissues. These tissues are common around the lungs and in the chest cavity, making people believe that this is where the ailment lies.

Other types of mesothelioma

Beyond just pointing out the difference between the lungs themselves and the surrounding tissues, it’s important to note that mesothelioma can exist in other areas, where there are similar tissues. Some examples include:

  • In a person’s abdomen, when it is known as peritoneal mesothelioma
  • In the tissue surrounding the heart
  • In the tissues surrounding the testicles

These types of mesothelioma may be less common, but they can still be very dangerous. With all types of mesothelioma, one of the most important things is getting prompt treatment, and early detection is always a positive.

That being said, this is also a very dangerous condition that does have high mortality rates. Treatment can be expensive. Those who find themselves in this position need to make sure that they understand all the legal options at their disposal.
