Where is asbestos found?

Asbestos was once thought to be a safe option for specific uses, such as insulating homes. In the United States, mining of asbestos stopped in 2002, and many uses of the substance have been stopped because it was discovered that it can lead to mesothelioma, a fatal cancer. Still, it’s possible that individuals today might come into contact with asbestos.

While the use of it isn’t as widespread as it once was, there are some specific uses that individuals should be aware of. For example, homes that were built prior to the 1970s might have asbestos fibers in the insulation. Typically, this will be in wall or ceiling insulation, and disturbing it can cause the hazardous fibers to be released into the air.

In the past, the substance was commonly used in shipbuilding, construction and automotive. This included everything from textiles and electric motor components to conduits for electrical wires and transmission components.

Asbestos is still used in this country sometimes. It is imported for use in vinyl tile, automotive clutches, corrugated sheeting, brake pads, roofing materials and imported cement pipe. People who are around any of these or who work with older products that contain asbestos must ensure they are being extremely cautious.

Any individual who was exposed to asbestos must ensure they’re paying close attention to their health. Mesothelioma primarily impacts the lungs, but there are other manifestations that can occur. Mesothelioma is a terminal condition, but early diagnosis may enable a person to receive palliative care that allows them to enjoy their remaining days. Seeking compensation for asbestos-related issues is possible and may help families to avoid financial ruin that can come with this type of situation.
