Can children get mesothelioma?

On Behalf of | Sep 10, 2024 | Mesothelioma |

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer often caused by exposure to asbestos. It usually occurs in the chest or in the abdomen. It can have different symptoms depending on the location. Trouble breathing is common with mesothelioma near the lungs, while swelling and stomach pain are common when the cancer develops in the abdominal tissues.

In both cases, it is technically possible for children to get this aggressive type of cancer, but it is rare. Some estimates claim that only around 5% of mesothelioma patients are 20 years old or younger. Some say it could be as low as 2%. The vast majority of patients are at a more advanced stage in life, and this type of cancer is most common among those who are in their 60s and older.

Is there less risk for children?

No. Asbestos is extremely dangerous for both children and adults alike.

The reason for fewer cases of mesothelioma in children is that mesothelioma develops after a long latency period. It takes decades for someone to develop asbestos-related cancer after they have been exposed to asbestos. So there is certainly still risk to a child who faces exposure. It’s just that the child may not develop mesothelioma until they are much older.

Mesothelioma cases are often complex, and it is important for family members who have lost a loved one to know what legal steps they can take at this time.
