Why was asbestos used? History of dangerous minerals

On Behalf of | Mar 14, 2025 | Asbestos |

Asbestos is a mineral that has been widely used for many years because of its fireproofing properties. This mineral was used in many fields, including vehicles, construction, manufacturing and shipyards. People would place these minerals in walls, pipes, construction materials, ceilings, packaging and fabrics. Brake pads are another example where it was used because of its heat-resistant properties.

However, many studies have shown that asbestos is an immensely dangerous mineral. If someone were to inhale small asbestos fibers, these fibers could scar lung tissue, leading to breathing difficulties, lung disease and cancer. After being exposed to asbestos, victims could begin developing medical conditions after more than 10 years.

New asbestos regulations to protect people

Asbestos was widely used until around 1989. A partial ban restricted the use, manufacture, importation and distribution of asbestos products. These regulations were meant to protect people from exposure to asbestos.

The 1989 ban only limited the management of asbestos, but it did not outright ban the mineral. Many of the corporations who profited from using it went to great measures to try and challenge claims that it was harmful. The fight against asbestos continued for many years as the mineral was continually imported into the U.S. In 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency enacted a new law that completely banned the last form of asbestos.

Regulations may have banned the use of asbestos, but that does not mean people are safe. Many people can still be exposed to asbestos from older buildings and materials. Others will only be now experiencing the adverse effects of previous exposure. Victims may need to explore their compensation options for asbestos exposure.
