Asbestos in toys: What every parent needs to know

The idea that asbestos could be present in children’s toys and products is unsettling, but unfortunately, it has happened. While asbestos is most commonly associated with old buildings and industrial products, it has also been found in items meant for kids. Crayons, toy crime lab kits and makeup products marketed to young children have all been found to contain asbestos fibers in past investigations into exposure in the U.S.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once widely used for its heat resistance and durability. However, when inhaled or ingested, asbestos fibers can become lodged in the body, leading to serious health issues such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. These illnesses often take years or decades to develop, making early exposure particularly troubling.

How could this happen?

The presence of asbestos in children’s products is usually accidental. It often comes from talc, a mineral that can be contaminated with asbestos because they are found near each other in the earth. Some crayons and toy makeup kits, for example, have been found to contain talc that tested positive for asbestos. These contaminated products have sometimes made it onto store shelves despite regulations designed to keep children safe.

The issue highlights a gap in oversight and enforcement. While the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sets standards for toy safety, it does not always require asbestos testing for talc-based products. This leaves room for dangerous substances to go undetected. When watchdog organizations or investigative reporters have independently tested these products, asbestos has occasionally been found—raising serious concerns for parents and safety advocates.

If a child has been exposed to asbestos, medical monitoring may be recommended, even though symptoms may not appear for years. Parents concerned about past exposure should consult with their child’s pediatrician and consider discussing the situation with a skilled legal team that understands asbestos-related claims.
